Allergens

With spring comes warmer weather, greener grass, and unfortunately increased allergens, especially in your home. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to make your home less likely to cause your sneezes and watery eyes. Take back the control of your home and enjoy breathing healthier with these tips.

1. Dust is one of the biggest factors for home allergens.

Make sure to dust thoroughly and frequently with a duster or cloth that works to attract the dust rather than spreading it around in the air. Similarly, dust and other allergens can easily collect in air ducts. We offer air duct cleaning and repairs for this very reason!

2. Carpet attracts a lot of allergens, from pollen to pet dander.

If you must have carpet or rugs rather than hardwood floors, take care to use a vacuum a few times a week.

3. Speaking of vacuums, use one with a HEPA filter.

Unlike traditional vacuums, this filter prevents the allergens from dispersing in the air as you vacuum. HEPA filters are also ideal for air conditioners. For air conditioners, our Baker Brothers Plumbers can stop by and replace the filter for you and apply UV air sanitizers to help keep it clean and free of allergens.

4. If you have pets and are allergic to dander, vacuuming often is especially important.

Additionally, washing your furry friends with moisturizing shampoo and keeping them off beds/furniture that is used by humans will help the spread.

5. Employ the double-mat rule.

There should be a mat on either side of doors leading outside to help trap allergens from shoes. For extra points, always remove shoes after entering to keep outdoor allergens from spreading everywhere you walk.

6. Rugs, Curtains & More

If you have washable textiles, from rugs to curtains, wash them weekly at high temperature to kill any dust mites (and their eggs!).

7. Windows & Doors

In order to keep pollen out of the home, keep all windows and doors shut unless it is necessary, especially early in the morning or at night.]

8. Mold

Mildew and mold are common allergens found inside the home, especially in warm and wet areas such as the bathroom.

9. Fans & Vents

Regularly check to make sure fans and vents are working properly and that all tiles are fixed when broken. Keep a caulk gun handy to repair whenever bathroom or kitchen caulk splits or breaks down.

Allergies can be uncomfortable, but there are ways to ease the cause rather than just treat the symptoms. If you find that you are still having trouble with your home, give our experienced technicians a call at 214-892-2225 and we’ll come out immediately to have a look.
