Baker Brothers Energy Saving Tips Featured On Local Dallas TV

February 22, 2019

Earlier this week, Baker Brothers Plumbing Air & Electric along with our expert, Bradley Hehn,  was featured on WFAA Dallas on location in Rockwall TX. In the news story, Hehn explains some tips to save energy and lower our utility bills.

As Hehn explains, annual energy cost for a single family home in the U.S. is more than $2,000, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

One of the reasons utility bills are so high is that 90 percent of U.S. homes are under-insulated. This means heat leaks out of your house in the winter and hot, muggy air seeps in during the summer. This leaking air can be partially prevented by adding insulation in attics.

“I did an insulation job on a home about a few years ago and his bill went from $600 to under $200 a month,” Hehn said. “It was a rather large house, too.” Hehn suggests that the best investment for energy savings is to add insulation to the attic.

Hehn also provides a few other tips to help identify energy savings:

  • Close the chimney.  Unless you are actively using your fireplace, keep the damper closed. Ensuring the chute is closed prevents a cold draft from leaking into the house. Your cool air conditioned air may also leak out through the chimney in summer, too.  If you have drafts and leaking air, your HVAC system will have to work harder.
  • Change the air filter. Hehn suggests changing the air filter for the HVAC system regularly and frequently will lower utility bills. Even though most filters need to be replaced every 90 days, changing them every month saves money because your HVAC system functions more efficiently..
  • Use a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats with it’s automatic features can help reduce energy usage while you’re sleeping or away from your home. Maintaining an average temperature and preventing the HVAC system from working too hard may save a homeowner about 30 percent on their heating and cooling bills.
