EPA R22 Freon Ban In Dallas Baker Brothers Air Conditioning Has The Solution

Hi, I’m Bradley Hehn, Senior Field Supervisor here at Baker Brothers Plumbing and Air. I’m here to talk to you today about R-22. What is R-22? R-22 or freon, same thing, it’s the refrigerant that’s inside your system. It’s actually the most common refrigerant that’s in HVAC systems across the Metroplex.

So R-22 is being phased out by the EPA. They found the chlorine inside of it to actually be damaging to the ozone. So oddly enough, the phase out for R-22 began back in the ’70s, but just now we’re at the very end of it. We’re actually getting rid of it and making it go away for good, okay, so come January 1st of the year 2020, they’re going to stop all production of it.

What that means to the homeowner is if you’ve got a system that is R-22, you get a leak in your system or something catastrophic where we have to put new refrigerant back into it, the cost of R-22 is going to be through the roof. It’s already high. It’s just getting higher. Each month it goes higher and higher and higher.

So let’s say you have a compressor failure or a major leak in a coil or something of that nature. Chances are, you’re going to be forced at that time to switch over the entire system to be able to accept the new refrigerant, the 410a, because it moves at a lot higher pressures than what the R-22 does. So a lot of people are taking advantage of being proactive now before the prices really spike and jump through the roof. The replacement for it is R410a. So catastrophic failure, compressors failing, leaks in coils, things like that are forcing customers to switch over to the new refrigerant which is the R410a again.

So basically in a nutshell, if you’re on the old stuff, it’s a good thing to be proactive and switch over to the new before you’re 100% forced to do and without air.

Here’s the best thing to do if you’ve got an R-22 air conditioner. Give a licensed contractor like Baker Brothers a call. Let us come out and give you a detailed health report on your system so we can make sure that you and your home are ready for the new year.
